Feb/March Update
08 March, 2012
Dear Friends and Ministry/Prayer Partners:
The March rains came in February this year. That’s a blessing, because our garden really needed it, and recently we have been on water rationing. The local farmers are happy, too. After the 3-year drought was finally broken last year, no one is ready to begin complaining about early rains! Meanwhile we are enjoying head lettuce, tomatoes, and sweet corn from our garden, and the beets are ready now as well.
February was a busy month, as we knew it would be. It began with Bob delivering some guest lectures at St. Paul’s University in ...
Prison Walls and Blessings
12 January, 2012

“These prison walls can’t obstruct God’s blessings.” Simon sat across from me, his earnest eyes confirming the intensity with which he had just made this affirmation. Tall, slender and in his mid-30’s, Simon was clad in the ubiquitous grey-and-white striped uniform worn by all inmates in Kenya’s maximum security Naivasha Prison. We were facing one another in two classroom-style desk-chairs, engaged in a little “one-on-one” time in the prison’s secondary education building, and I was in the middle of a conversation that seemed, frankly, a bit surreal.
As part-time faculty at Kijabe’s ...
November Ministry Update
15 November, 2011
Dear Prayer and Ministry Partners,
Our internet connections are very on-again, off-again, so if you have e-mailed us and we have not responded, please send again as it is possible it did not reach us. We are considering other connection options, but past experience has shown us that in general, access to the internet tends to be much less dependable during the rainy season.
Meanwhile, here is a brief synopsis for your prayerful reading:
Anesthesia Problem:
Thanks to all of you who prayed faithfully over the hospital’s problem with one of its anesthesia mac...
Appetizers Rather Than Buffets
29 September, 2011
This article is re-posted from our friend, Chris Conti, who is a SIM missionary serving in Peru. You can visit her web page at http://conti.with.sim.org.
by Chris Conti:
In teaching about missions in the church, I have learned that we need to offer appetizers instead of buffets. When we leave a buffet, having eaten all our $11.99 worth, we sometimes feel a bit guilty. With our tummies full, we feel a bit numb, almost nauseated.
The world of missions is so large, so overwhelming. How can we pray for each needy person, each unreached people group or each missionary who sha...
Back Into Africa!
07 September, 2011
Dear Friends and Ministry Partners,
I am writing this from Kijabe, Kenya but will wait until we are in Nairobi tomorrow to send it since we are unable to connect to the internet from our house at Moffat Bible College for now. But we are glad to be out of the summer heat and into a cooler climate. In fact we have bought a truckload of firewood and tend to wear sweaters in the house. I apologize if this is a bit long, but if you persevere and read to the end, you may enjoy reading our monkey story. (!)
We arrived in Nairobi with all our luggage Wednesday evening, August 24 about...
Returning to Kenya!
08 August, 2011
Dear Friends and Ministry Partners,
We are now only two weeks away from departing for another term of missionary service in Kenya. We are scheduled to fly out of Chicago on Tuesday, August 23, arriving in Nairobi the next evening. We will complete our return journey to Kijabe by car on August 25 and spend the next few days setting up house again and readjusting to Kijabe’s thin air – elevation: 7500 feet (or 1 ˝ miles.)
This year of home assignment has zipped by so fast – probably because we have packed it so full! We are now officially beyond the 30,000 miles mark in our fai...
